Tossing protocol to the wind, Carter's game for taking cheap shots at a sitting president, but he seems to forget his own role in the turmoil we now find ourselves in. You will recall that one of the high profile events of the Carter administration was the Iran Hostage affair. If Carter was one third the president he should have been (or the left claims he was), Iran would have been dealt with summarily and conclusively for taking US diplomats and military personnel hostage (an act of war). If the situation was addressed as it should have been, with the full weight of the US military, something tells me we wouldn't be groping around in a post 9-11 world worrying about dirty bombs, an 'addiction' to Middle East oil or the cartoon-hedeen. Either a lack of belief or perhaps a lack of zeal. I think it's clear that Iraq has sapped the will of many pro-Invasion Americans. Not because of the terrorism that still happens in Iraq but because even after all of the sacrifices and the incredible amounts of money spent much of Iraq and the muslim world continues to be a pustulant cesspit.

Frankly it's clear that the next two years will determine the post-Bush foreign policy. If Iraq can be turned around then perhaps there won't be a complete abandonment of a foreign policy based on creating democracies in the muslim world. But my estimate is that most people are just sick and tired of bleeding for muslims.

It's time that either muslims stood up and started acting like adults and dealing with their problems or it's becoming clear that it's time to stop the nation-building and being the nation-destroying.

An interesting military weapons concept

Hmmm.

1. Electromagnetic railguns are the projectile weapons of the future.

Normal chemical propellant based weapons are limited to the maximum expansion rate of the burning propellant. This can be increase by injection of plasma and other artifices, but the upper limit on velocity isn't all that much higher than what we've achieved already.

2. Rockets are very useful, but very very expensive in many ways.

One major expense is the propellant which not only has to accelerate the warhead but also the propellant itself.

3. Railguns can scale upwards pretty effectively.

This upwards scaling can either be in terms of the weight of the projectile or the maximum velocity/energy of the projectile. So the railgun could scale upwards in the diameter of the gun bore or in the overall length of the gun itself.

4. GPS and inertial guidance systems already allow projectiles to achieve incredible accuracy.

5. A large fixed installation based in Montana or Colorado would be easier to build, maintain and use than ad hoc installations all over the world.

6. There is a push in the military to reduce potential casualties by replacing humans with robotics.

...

Frankly I think the next major weapons system is going to be an intercontinental railgun. By building a large-scale railgun with a very long gun tube it would be possible to launch 250lb SDB GPS guided munitions across intercontinental distances.

The advantage of this kind of system is that it's extremely efficient. Rather than expending an enormous amount of energy to move an aircraft, manned or UAV, to a drop point, only the munition itself is sent. With this sort of system a massive rate of fire could be achieved and highly disparate bombing missions could be completed simultaneously. Another interesting factor is a ToT (Time on Target) mission utilising such an intercontinental railgun system. By launching GPS guided munitions on specific trajectories and at specific velocities, it would be possible to time the impacts so that a multitude of such munitions would either impact simultaneously or in specifically timed pattern.

Another important factor is that such a weapons system wouldn't require the permission of potentially hostile nations to the emplacement and use of local airfields. While airfields will continue to be necessary in the future, by implementing one or more intercontinental railguns it would be possible to have both the advantages of bomb laden aircraft and artillery, yet without many of the disadvantages of both.

It's an interesting concept.

Iran. What to do. What to do.

Hmmm.

Iran is in the news lately because the combination of a fruitcake pro-apocalypse nuke wielding madman and .... well. You don't really need to combine that with anything to really make for bad news. So far the substantial number of possible solutions haven't really thrilled me. Most involve either lying supine and waiting for the inevitable attack or doing something even more silly.

But there actually *is* a solution. The key point is to look back at history to the Iran-Iraq War, and the nearly non-existant Iranian domestic economy and just where the oil is in Iran.

To address each point. The Iran-Iraq War came about because Saddam Hussein want to take over the Iranian oil fields and consolidate his control over the more significant sources of Middle East oil. Saddam was also of the opinion, right or wrong, that the Iranian oil fields were actually drawing oil from underneath Iraq. So Saddam instigated a terrible decades long war between Iran and Iraq that saw huge population losses and the widespread use of chemical warfare and human wave attacks. At the end of the War, which was a draw, the Iraqi economy and military was a shambles and the Iranians were fielding "soldiers" who were as young as 13 years old.

The Iranian domestic economy is largely non-existant due to massive corruption, overregulation and mis-management. Additionally the Iranian economy couldn't recover from the debacle of the Iran-Iraq War because so many men had died or were maimed, there simply weren't enough workers available. In essence what domestic economy exists does so either because of corruption that allows it to flourish or because it's a Black Market economy. In some reports the unemployment rate hovers somewhere around 35%-45% though it's probable that nobody, even the Iranian government, doesn't really know how many aren't working. In an economy with high corruption or very strict government regulations many people will prefer to work on a cash basis and thus elude government tracking.

The major Iranian oil fields, production equipment, refineries and export facilities are located in southwest Iran, right next to Iraq. This was one of the reasons why Saddam invaded Iran; to capture the Iranian oil fields and take over their income. And this is the Achilles Heel of Iran.

If the US military were to invade Iran one strategy could be to simply take and control the oil fields. Continue to operate the oil fields at market prices but deposit all funds into a *non-UN* controlled fund to be turned over to the *new* Iranian government once one comes into being. In the meantime it won't matter how deep or how many nuclear facilities Iran has. Without a steady infow of money from oil sales Iran will have to shut them down. Even if Iran is able to survive for a time on financial reserves continuing to fund these nucelar research operations will simply drain their reserves even faster. And with no domestic or international economy, apart from oil sales, to speak of, there aren't any other sources for Iran to tap.

Take the oil, deposit the revenues, put Iran on an allowance.

The only reason that Iran has the ability to fund this sort of nonsense is because of oil, and nothing else. Remove oil from the equation and Iran will either collapse of it's own accord or it will have to acommodate a serious resolution to this issue. And the Iranian government collapsing is entirely possible. Much of the government's domestic control comes from paid thugs who keep locals in order. The key word is "paid". With significantly reduced income the Iranian government will find it harder and harder to continue operating as it has been. The reduction in income will also severely impact Iran's ability to purchase foreign help, political or military.

All in all it sounds workable. Just as long as we don't turn it into Oil-For-Food2.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://conconservative.blogspot.com/2006/01/iran-what-to-do-what-to-do.html' title='Iran. Let's start things off by having a look at one of my favorite glaring examples of gun control stupidity: Canada

As Canadian liberal pols are poised to waste more money on advancing their failed gun control state, they've also adopted a new and novel slogan: Blame America

Gosh, I really hope they didn't have to pay Mike Moore a consulting fee for that one.

OK, moving from one freak show to another... MTV: Is MTV fair to gun owners?? Apparently not without the liberal sub-text.
MTV is banned in my house, so I didn't see the show (personally, I blame MTV for the fact that American youth culture resembles the 8th Circle of Hell and IMHO, the sooner this 'network' is forced into chapter 11, the better).

Paul McCartney's source for animal activism: Bambi!?!?
OK, so you predicate your activism on a cartoon? Too many drugs, Paul... too many drugs.

Back to reality, here is a very interesting concealed carry dialogue. It illustrates how the rank-and-file lack a substantive grasp of the concepts of self-protection and self -empowerment. Who needs Tony Robbins when we have Sam Colt???

Since I understand the modus operandi of the Bolshevik mainstream media, it never surprises me when the isolated school or place-of-employment shooting grabs national headlines while at the same time, the common occurrence of armed citizens acting in their own self-defense isn't worth mentioning outside the local scope. So, for the troglodytes who still don't get it, for the liberal social-istas who want to disarm us and for the simple-minded 'centerists' who think shotguns for trap & skeet are OK, but handguns should be outlawed, there are these real news headlines:

Robbery Victim Shoots Suspect

Gas Station Clerk Shoots, Kills Robbery Suspect

Man Held in Burglary

Homeowner Shoots Suspect in Home Invasion

Homeowner Fires Shots, Foiling Burglary Attempt

Citizens Help Catch Bank Robber

Police Say Homeowner Shot One, Others Scatter

Shootout Kills Man, Wounds Two Deputies

Two Men Wounded in Home Invasion

A Case of Life or Self-Defense

(hat-tip, Evan Nappen)

As you read these articles, you begin to realize the logical conclusion: the ability to arm ourselves results in the ability to protect ourselves. Quite to the contrary, Native American tribes were busy killing each other off with inter-tribal warfare and torture long before 'the white man' arrived on the scene. Forcing their captives to each their own flesh as it was cut from their bodies, skinning alive, burning alive and being staked to the ground so that forest critters could eat you alive are just a few examples of the unique and creative agonies they customarily visited upon each other. Revenge killing was common, slavery was widespread and inter-tribal warfare was perpetual. And yet our delusional, arrogant and deceptive friends on the left would have you believe that the trouble all started when white people arrived. I would venture to say that the European arrival in North America helped bring all these barbaric practices to an end. Lord knows how many Native American lives were saved by the arrival of our forefathers. It may very well signal the end of Republican majorities, but it is certainly not a Democrat mandate. To understand what it all means, all one needs to do is look at voter turn-out. Not only did independents stay home, but Republicans didn't even turn out for Forester. Why not? Because he was an unremarkable one-trick-pony who was incapable of energizing the base and he refused to articulate on issues that are important to that base. Unlike NJ Republicans, NJ Democrats vote party over principal every time and this is a winning combination when Republicans field weak candidates (Forester) or deny party support to strong ones (Schundler). No, the NJ (and Virginia) elections weren't Democrat mandates: they were Republican mandates. Signals to the party that if they don't get it together on the issues (War On Terror, immigration, spending, tax reform, etc.) and go on the offensive against militant socialist Democrats in Congress, they can expect big looses in '06 and '08. I'm not optimistic...

I'm Very Disappointed Today...

... not because 'Scooter' Libby was indicted, but because Joe Wilson wasn't.

Hideki Tojo & Al Franken...

Separated At Birth??

Boycott Bond

Well, the new 'Bond' is already sounding as inane as the moonbatista he replaced.

I hate handguns. This speaks to four issues: 1/ It proves the UN, in all it's corrupt arrogance, doesn't care about the civil rights of citizens of sovereign nations. 2/ It illustrates how the UN, through it's manipulation of the treaty clause (Article VI, Clause 2), seeks to impose it's will on the citizens of the United States and the world in general. 3/ It demonstrates the need for the US to immediately withdraw from the UN and evict these presumptuous international squatters from the Manhattan real estate they currently occupy. 4/ It proves why the treaty clause is in serious need of revision. We need to get the heck out of the UN and get the UN the heck out of here. However, his decision will determine much more than a potential replacement for O'Connor. Huge numbers of the active conservative base will be watching very closely. If he selects Edith Jones or Janice Rogers Brown, he'll win back support from conservatives who are disappointed with his poor immigration performance and penchant for out of control spending. If he chooses an unacceptable candidate, like his buddy Alberto Gonzales, it will signal the beginning of the end of conservative support for the GOP and perhaps lead to big losses in '06. Didn't anybody pick up on the crescent/Islam relationship? Didn't this occur to any of the victim's family members? Even if it's an accident, I don't think this design is acceptable.

Update

Here is a follow-up to the above captioned article (yeah, I was 'interviewed'). OK, let me see if I have this straight: a design firm creates a memorial that they know will be open to public interpretation and scrutinized for everything from esthetics to a 'deeper meaning'. Then the architects are surprised when some people interpret the design as an Islamic crescent? Then the apparent solution is simply call it something other than a 'crescent' and the problem will go away? Interesting. Tom Sokolowski, a Stage II jury member and director of the Andy Warhol Museum, seems to think that those who see the Islamic symbolism and are offended by it are "delusional" and that "To take this small-minded, bigoted view is disgusting and repellent." So Tom, according to you, art is interpretive as long as it's your interpretation and anything deviating from your view is crazy, stupid, racist and otherwise unacceptable? Hey Tom, the dry cleaners just called... your Brown Shirt is ready.

UN Smack Down

The latest installment of the Volcker report doesn't pull any punches with regard to the responsibility for the Oil For Food scam. But I'll start off by emphasizing that my support for the military is total and without question and the death of any person serving in the armed forces is a loss not only for the family, but for all of us.

I've left this story alone until now, but now I have to get this out of my system. As regards Cindy Sheehan... let's face it, she's an activist (the Birkenstocks give her away), she was an activist long before her son went to Iraq and I suspect he joined the army in the first place to get the heck away from her. Her husband has very recently filed for divorce (he's a saint for sticking with her this long) and her family has gone out of their way to voice their opposition to her. “This country is not worth dying for” - Cindy's own words reveal her activism and the media's canine subservience to the 'Cindy Sheehan story' has enabled her to use the death of her own son to advance her activism. With the usual suspects of the left falling in line behind her, checkbooks in hand and with the full weight of their useful idiot membership to bear, the nation and the world will be forced to endure the incessant drone of Vietnam comparisons, 'Bush Lied' chants and renditions of 'Imagine' that have the physical effects of a dose of Ipecac. I said it before and I'll say it again: you can say you support the troops all you want, but you can't support the troops and not support the mission. By doing so, you become a willing tool of the enemy (Islamic terrorism, in this case). Mrs. Sheehan may not be strapping explosives to herself, but as far as Bin Laden is concerned, what she is doing is the next best thing.

Gun Rights 'At Issue' In The UN

American gun owners need to be very aware of the ongoing UN efforts to abridge the second amendment. In this respect, Senator Vitter's Second Amendment Protection Act of 2005 deserves every measure of our support. In reading the Newhouse article, the arguments presented by the anti-rights groups are full of the usual truck-sized holes, but one in particular is worth mentioning here:

Wendy Cukier, president of Canada's Coalition to End Gun Violence, said the issue is a priority to the United States' northern and southern neighbors because 80 percent of gun crimes committed in Mexico and 50 percent in Canada involve guns that originated in the United States. Strong gun control laws in Mexico and Canada, she said, are being undermined by lax laws in the United States.

"The United States never hesitates to impose standards on other countries: pushing Canada to strengthen its border controls in the fight on terrorism and for Mexico and Central American countries to reduce the flow of drugs north across the border," Cukier said. "But it won't take steps to reduce the flow of guns outside the United States, and that's a big problem in Canada and Mexico."

Really Ms. Cukier? Not according to this article:

Mexico’s strict gun control laws are contributing to an illegal gun market and easier access to weapons, according to U.S. law enforcement officials that are close observers of a recent upswing in border violence.

So, as observed by real law enforcement officers who track this activity for a living, it's the oppressive gun control that's actually to blame for the increase in crime. But I suppose you'd like us to ignore law enforcement studies and accept the word of the UN and their anti-rights bed mates instead? Would that be the 'Oil For Food Scandal' UN or the 'UN Sex Abuse Scandal' UN? Oh, I forgot... it's all the same UN! And would that be the same anti-rights groups that promised British gun owners that their legally owned firearms were not in danger of confiscation?? Hmmmm....

Toronto Mayor: "There's No Reason To Own A Gun"

Mayor Miller thinks there's no reason to have a gun in the home. The dynamic is simple. Bears are territorial. The big bears force younger bears out in ever widening circles to find their own digs. This works great in British Columbia, but not in Jersey. The problem is created by the animal rights activists who are in control of NJ wildlife management. By disallowing a bear hunt, the ever-increasing bear population will continue to follow their normal patterns of behavior, thus placing them in close proximity to us and our kids. To say local authorities are unprepared for the inevitable bear encounters is an understatement. Unfortunately, it will take a tragedy to snap wildlife management out of their PETA-induced stupors. Of course by then, it'll be too late.

~Update~

With residential bear 'encounters' on the rise, it seems the DEP is re-thinking it's position on the annual bear hunt. This is the document viewed by Congressman John Conyers (and 88 other frothing Socialistas) as compelling evidence that 'Bush lied'. Excuse me, but I don't think Congressman Conyers would know compelling evidence if it bit him on the behind. This memo consists of nothing more than third-party iterations (hearsay and totally inadmissible in any court outside of Beijing), and one or two subjects of conjecture like 'it seemed clear...'. At my place of employment, I can concoct a memo that states a coworker claimed to see the CEO arrive for work wearing a chicken suit while dancing a scene from 'Swan Lake'. She has a history of making anti-gun statements and she’s co-authored at least one article (that I’ve found so far) that tows the typical anti-gun line. In addition, it seems the good doctor really knows how to win friends and influence people over at ASU. I'd say this is just starting to get interesting...

~Update~

It turns out that Dr. Rimsza is not the 'Director' of the Student Health and Wellness Center at ASU and hasn't been for quite some time. In the wake of the flap surrounding her department (see a follow up here), it seems she resigned as a result of the complaints and subsequent investigation. She is currently a co-director at the W. P. Carey School of Business. Co-director? School of Business? Seems like quite step down, don't you think? I wonder how her credentials ended up misrepresented in the Fox News story? This wonderful idea would give any student who’s inclined to pick up a firearm some background on safe and responsible gun etiquette. But critics like Dr. Mary Rimsza, director of ASU’s Student Health Center, don’t agree. “I'm afraid these programs are really geared more toward increasing peoples interest in guns rather than safety.” But wait just a second, Doc. If you assume that, therefore you also have to assume that sex education classes are really geared more toward increasing people’s interest in sex rather than preventing sexually transmitted disease and unwanted pregnancy, right? But that can't be, since the education establishment is constantly telling us that sex-ed is all about the safety of the students and it’s never about the sex. So why can't a firearms safety course exist solely for the safety of the students? I think perhaps Arizona needs another course of study added. One on how to identify hypocrisy. And it should be mandatory for Dr. Rimsza and the rest of her colleagues in academic snobbery. After all, teaching professionals shouldn't go through life with one foot in their mouths.

Amnesty International: Smoke & Mirrors From The Left

Well, the latest AI report is out and as usual, it spares no ink on America. In terms of 'human rights', one would think the lives of millions of newly liberated Iraqis and Afghanis would matter more to Amnesty International than the discomfort of a few terrorists held in conditions that are arguably better than those they ever experienced outside of captivity, right? Well, it's no secret that AI is far more concerned with 'human rights abuses' the War On Terror is allegedly causing than the reality of the selective genocide and suffering that came to an end with the destruction of the Hussein regime. It's also no secret that AI, run by leftist activists, collaborates with the most extreme left anti-war organizations out there. The result is an Amnesty International that values it's petty left wing moralism far more than 'human rights'. So, the US is global enemy number-one because of underwear hats at Abu Ghraib and Gitmo Koran-flushing allegations? Give me a break! What happened at Abu Ghraib pales in comparison with most college hazing and Gitmo is a day spa compared to what the detainees are used to living in. I won't bother ridiculing Amnesty International. They do a pretty good job making fools of themselves.

Mullings Nails The 'Moderate Compromise'

The brilliant Rich Galen is right on point:

It is in the nature of a compromise that neither side gets everything it wants.
